The festival was founded in 1913 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Giuseppe Verdi’s birth. The first production — Aida — set the tone for open-air opera spectacles. Since then, every summer the ancient Roman amphitheatre in Verona transforms into one of the grandest opera stages in the world, merging historical setting with Italian operatic grandeur.
