The Rheingau Musik Festival was founded in 1987 with the goal of revitalizing the cultural life of the Rheingau region. Its first season took place in the summer of 1988 with 19 concerts, and since then it has grown to over 100 events annually. The initiative came from Michael Herrmann, who remains the festival’s artistic director to this day. Inspired by a similar festival in Schleswig-Holstein, Rheingau Musik Festival brought together historic venues — from medieval monasteries to wine estates — to create a unique setting for classical music. The festival is primarily funded by private sponsors, making it one of the largest privately financed music festivals in Europe.

Held each year from late June to late August, the festival features a diverse program focused on classical music. Around 150 concerts are staged in various venues: grand symphonic performances at Wiesbaden’s Kurhaus, chamber ensembles in the halls of Johannisberg Castle, sacred music in the historic Eberbach Abbey, and jazz or pop evenings among the Rhine vineyards. In addition to concerts, the festival includes youth initiatives and educational programs such as masterclasses and children’s projects. Each season is marked by thematic focuses or tributes to individual composers, giving every festival summer a unique character.
